Linux Sharing Databases over the Internet

Question
Hello my friends,
I`m trying to figure out a way to share my movie TV show library (database) over the internet with friends and members of my family but i don`t know how to do it. I`ve already share my library through UPNP but that i`ve managed with the PCs in my net. My problem is how to with PCs over the internet.
So if I could synoptically to state what I`d like to achieve is:
- Let others browse and play movies from my library.
-Share my smart playlists
-Avoid others alterate my library (for example accidentally delete some movie).

I guess that more or less what I want is my instant of xbmc to act as a server...!
Btw there are many OSes involved (Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Win8 and Win8.1) and perhaps many different versions of XBMC (13.1-13.2)...
I would apreciate any kind of help...
Thanks in advance!
I hope i'm not being too demanding!!!

I think you need to at least consider the network bandwidth and latency issues before worrying about the finer points of the OS and XBMC versions being used. :-)

True!
But I`m running over a 50Mbps internet line and all the others users that i intend to share my xbmc with are having lines about the same speed as mine...so i presume we will not going to face serious bandwidth problems.
I would like it give it a try anyway...so try to help me out please!
Is there any HowTo or any Guide out there that i can consult?

I think you should look into using Plex https://plex.tv/ for sharing your media over the internet as it will likely need to be transcoded before sending to remote clients. They have plenty of configuration documentation here https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us

I suspect your 50Mbps bandwidth is download only not upload. Your upload bandwidth and distance/latency between your clients will be one of the limiting factors on performance.

You also need to consider the security implications of opening up your network (and media library) to inbound requests.

adr3nal1n is right about the upload speed. My upload speed is 10Mbps and it is just barely enough to stream 720p un-transcoded material to my office computer.

What I did personally to connect my XBMC server and my work machine is install LogMeIn Hamachi on both.

Here is a well written article on bandwidth and Latency. http://zoompf.com/blog/2011/12/i-dont-ca...g-yours-is

It's not all about the size of your pipe! ;-)

Hehehe...size matters somehowTongue
Thank you for the article...it has helped me to get the idea. But ,i mean, i don`t want to change software...from XBMC to Plex Media Server. I`ve tried to use Plex before and to be honest with you i haven`t found it satisfactory to my needs. I`m having more than 3500 movies,a lot of TV shows, a tone of Anime and some music...Plex just couldn`t keep up with the challenge and it was a really frustrating experience. So if I have to do it I`ll be using my beloved XBMC...!
Please understand that even though I may sound very stubborn, I`m doing it cause I have spent a huge amount of time to organize such a big multimedia collection and i don`t wish to throw it away (plus I don`t think I can afford the time needed to build up this collection again from the scratch). So please just bear with me!

So the idea is to create a VPN and connect everyone there ?
