Win 8 Storage Pool Disk Replacement
#1
Hi all,

About a year ago I built a HTPC and have now run out of space on the media drive. The PC boots from an SSD and there's currently 4 x 3TB drives in a single array via Window Storage Spaces / Pool equivalent of RAID 5 - parity backup. I'd rather not get rid of the case I have for something bigger (but this is an option) just for an easy life.

Due to the physical space limitations of the case my course of action would be to replace 1 of the 3TB drives with a 6TB drive. Is there anyone out there who can explain how I replace 1 of the physical drives in a Storage Space / Pool and re-build the data?

Many Thanks

Hi,

Using a 1x 6TB with 3x 3TB will not gain you anything.
the formula to calculate the size of a raid5 is (N-1)*Smin where N is the number of drives and Smin is the size of the smallest drive.

but will take this as an opportunity to say...
This one was of the reasons I few years ago went the NAS/HTPC device separation. These days I can upgrade/replace/retire one without affecting the other.
