I have been replacing some 720p files with 1080p versions with the same extension (this is not the case when they have different extensions or file names). Am I correct that the XBMC/Kodi will not recognize the updated quality without removing it and updating? It seems that the normal cleaning and updating I do doesn't change anything.

All you need to do is play the video real quick and then Kodi will update the streamdetails. Every time a video is played, Kodi updates all that resolution and codec info. I think this was done to support situations like yours where people update the video later on with a better quality.

Thanks, though I updated like 20 of 'em and I don't exactly remember which I did....

Then you will be pleasantly surprised when you go to play a 720p file and get 1080 ;-)
