Asus chromebox; what remote?
#1
Just ordered an asus chromebox and was going to get a PS3 remote to use with xbmc but i like the look of the fire tv remote.
Im wondering as both are bluetooth will either suffice and is there any modifications to any files necessary or will they both work out of the box

I see there is keymaps available for the Nuc and suggestions that it will work for the asus but still not a hundred percent on it

How much is the Fire TV remote? The FTV Stick remote is $15 which is a good deal IMO. And it does 90% of the things needed to do in Kodi right out of the box.

from amazon uk £24.99. Dearer than the PS3 one. Cant get the fire tv stick here yet unfortunately

here is the wiki on the various keymaps.

Would just love someone to confirm, although i suppose it shouldn't differ that much from the fire tv stick one

No, it's a universal remote, so it'll work with everything + be a PS3 bluetooth remote as well.

Too many buttons for my liking. I want something dead simple like you get with the ATV

nice i like that it learns from other factory remotes, this is what i have been looking for so long but i need it to have qwerty keyboard too to completely be all in one remote.

Is the Tivo Slider Pro worth a look? There are two versions - one with a USB dongle, one without. You need the USB dongle version. I've been using one with my Chromebox for a little while now. It has a QWERTY keyboard that slides up, with the SlowMo button being mapped to Stop. It's not perfect - a couple of the buttons aren't mapped yet - but it is a nice solution for combined media playback and text entry. If I'm honest I prefer the PS3 BD remote for pure media playback, but the Tivo Slider keyboard is definitely useful.

Both are quality products. There is nothing I find more frustrating than a cheap remote with rubbish buttons...

Can OpenElec be controlled from smartphone or pc over wifi? Because that would be very convenient.

Yes, via XBMC's Web interface and the official XBMC/Kodi Smartphone Apps.

There is also Yatse for Android Devices only:

You could also use the very easy to setup Flirc USB Dongle, and then program the dongle to map buttons on any spare remote control you have lying around with XBMC-shortcut keyboard controls.
Flirc is currently on sale at Amazon US for $14.95.
Its what I use currently and it is responsive and has superb range even when a Chromebox is VESA mounted behind the TV.

Another option for consideration and use with Flirc is the minimal design, backlit - Xbox One Media Remote:

Gotta add my 2 cents on this remote.

The volume up down and page up down are PAINFULLY slow repeating.

Unless there is a newer model out with a firmware upgrade It WILL be enough to piss you off.

I had high hopes for what APPEARS to be an awesome remote.

Dont waste your money.

I have as well found the Volume control less than satisfactory in XBMC. The problem being the volume increments are not big enough for each keypress. This will not be the remote controls fault, the same fault appears with my Harmony One.

But with the Harmony I can bypass XBMC volume control and just have it learn the TV's IR Volume commands.

There is a fix however - as someone on a thread here on the forums is working on increasing the XBMC volume increments so it works properly.
I'll try and find the thread....

I dunno, I think I may have to disagree.
If you map the volume function to any other keys (other than the ones I mentioned) its VERY fast responding.
Its a hardware issue IMO.
