since i started my skin project, i found a number of things that were (for me) "Gotchas". in case you don't know, it's a term from computer programming which basically refers to an error which is sneaky and/or easy to make. i figured it may be helpful to people looking to start skinning to have a list to look at when they are having problems.
i will post these as i remember them or encounter new ones
-Controls are rendered in the order they appear in the XML. This means a control which appears further down in a file will be rendered "on top of" a control which appears near the top. this becomes especially important when using transparent elements.
