Linux Better budget processor for HTPC use? Pentium G3220 or Celeron G1850
#1
The Pentium G3220 and the Celeron G1850 are pretty much the same price, The pentium has more cache, but the Celeron has a higher GPU clock speed (according to CPUBOSS) Which is better for HTPC usage with XBMC? I am wanting to build a small openelec box and I want to know which would give me a better experience, the cache or the faster GPU clock speed. I want to be able to play up to 1080P videos. deinterlace 480 resolution stuff, and have a fast responsive menu with Aeon Nox.

They are nearly identical. They benchmark the same, but the G1850 is a year newer and supports a couple extra features so I would go with that. Both will perform identically in Kodi-- they are both much, much faster than the minimum required to decode 1080p in software, much less hardware.

Since you plan to run openELEC, consider the chromebox. It's super, super cheap and runs Kodi great.

On Amazon at least, I am seeing the G3240 ($60) for $5 more than the G1850 ($55) so I would go with the G3240 in that case.

Why, because you have too much money and want to help Amazon out?
