I installed aeon5 and now my XBMC is stuck with the screen that says shutdown, movies, tv shows. I can't get to the settings menu to change back to the original skin. I must be using it wrong but I feel like Xbmc is almost useless now. When it starts up there is an error loading script at the top of the screen but no other menus available but shutdown video tv shows.

Press 'S' and go to Settings.
Does it say which script failed?

Try to rename your advancedsettings.xml this way your settings will revert to default when restarting.

You need to delete guisettings.xml rather than advanced settings.
