I would like to know if it is possible to access my media player (and all of it's content) using some mobile app that can access xmbc from outside of my local network.
Currently I'm using Plex Media Server to accomplish this. All I have to do is forward a port on my router and have Plex "broadcast" my media server. Then I can access all of my media from anywhere in the world. It's cool to be able to sit in a hotel room accross the country (or in another country) and not be limited by the selection of tv shows in that room. As long as I have internet access, I can grab my phone or tablet, log into my Plex Media server and watch a TV show or movie or listen to music.
Because of it's beautiful interface and more powerful feature set, I'd LOVE to switch from Plex to XBMC but I can't figure out how to do it. Am I really limited to using XMBC at home
