Can anyone advise or help here ,
I have an mybook live plugged into my asus rt-n66u
All my media is stored on mybook live but while I'm away from home I'd like to be able to still view my movie collection and watch anything I choose through xbmc on my iPad ?

That is not going to work very well unless you have a really high upload speed on your home internet, or your media is encoded in such a way that it will stream easily. You're best bet is to use a DLNA server that transcodes your media on the fly. For the iPad I would recommend AirVideo. Then you would use the AirVideo player and not XBMC on the iPad.
You could setup a remote source in XBMC, but I doubt your media would play smooth as noted above. With your router you can enable the FTP server and use that as a source in XBMC.
