Hi all just a quick question thinking about upgrading some of the components in my htpc current spec is below with the planned changes in brackets what do you think and will the current psu be ok or will that need to be replace to and if so what would you recommend? cheers

Is this just a HTPC, or do you use it for gaming as well?

You could suffice with a recent i3. The GPU in it is powerful enough for hardware-accelerated 1080p h.264 playback. Keep in mind you probably need to upgrade your motherboard as well.

If you only record and play back video, I don't think you need an i5 (or a heavy GPU).

Hi thanks for the reply, I posted in a bit of a rush so sorry for not stating my reason for upgrade its mainly for madVR I've tried running with the card I have now and you can imagine how that works lol you think the cpu will be fine then? cheers

No clue about MadVR, sorry. Google seems to talk mostly about GPU requirements (you'll know better than me no doubt).

Is the MSI you picked a silent card? Generally AMD's cards seem to run hotter (and make more noise) than nVidia's.

From what I have read the MSI card is supposed to run quite quiet and noise isn't a big problem really as its not in the room where I watch my movies it's in a well ventilated cupboard. I thank you for your help though its much appreciated

the 270X is probably the minimum AMD I'd recommend for madVR. Have you see the charts over at AVSforum showing what the various cards are capable of?
