Im wanting to try out retropie/emulationstation using the same rPI. Do i just need to install it to a 2nd SD card or can i use both on the same card

I think you'll be better off using a separate sd card.

You don't get the full retropie experience, but you do get the cores that actually work on the rpi.
And of cource the fact that you launch the emulators through kodi, no sdcards exchange needed.
