you'll have ~6-8 bays for drives (depending on which pc), run any OS you are comfortable with such as Windows or a free one like OpenMediaVault. This gets you a proper NAS which can be expanded as you wish and is future proof. The goal here is to get storage that can be expanded and controlled by you, not some commercial company, and its going to be much cheaper. With a budget of $800 USD you can clearly afford to get Qnap/Synology if you really value the self contained unit, nothing wrong with that either.

For clients pick low cost devices like Pi2, Android boxes etc.

bumping this thread, looking to migrate my server needs from my chromebox to a standalone nas server

currently looking at synology 215j and qnap ts 231

what will give a better solution for:
mysql server
tvheadend
nfs share
ftp web client?

how hard is to set-up the tvheadend on qnap/synology as oppose to *buntu?
