@stefcon1 - run the RAM scanner on uk.crucial.com, see what that recommends. If you've got 2x1GB at the moment then they're throwaway, and 4GB will cost you ~£48 delivered. If you're lucky enough to have 1x2GB then it's £24 for another 2GB. And if you have 4GB already, give up on the RAM route... :-)

It has 1x2GB, so could double that to 2 x2GB. Found a compatible one on Amazon for £21.47.

What SSD would i need? It wasn't clear to me with that compatibilty tool.

Any Sata 2 SSD should work. I like Crucial best as a SSD brand, but I am using a OCZ in mine FYI.

I am using many revos with no problem at all. Then again I am using a decent os.

If you're intending on replacing what you have now... what are you using now?

I genuinely use merely a few GB on mine, but it wasn't cost-effective to buy an 8GB unit. But I'm running OE with no local media and a shared, remote library - so it's OS, Kodi and thumbnails only. I can't say how much your Windows installation would need, and I don't know if you're storing local media.

I'd guess you'd need at least 64GB, maybe 128GB for Windows and your core apps, plus your media, but someone else can correct me on that.

Re: brand, I like Samsung, but any mainstream brand will do. Cheaper ones tend to be slower at writing than reading, more expensive ones are more symmetrical, but - again - it depends on what your system is likely to be doing. You're probably mostly reading, so a premium model is probably unnecessary.

To give you an idea of size...
My revos (both r3610s) use about 20GB on the C drive (60GB windows partition), another 80GB windows partition holding about 15GB (backups, which don't need to be there + kodi and various odds and ends) and about 10GB for openelec. I'm looking to replace the hard drives with ssd's in the near future, and for me 64GB would be plenty for a dual boot windows / openelec machine. Having said that I'll probably go for 120 or 128s, because the price difference isn't much and I'll have more flexibility if I re-use them elsewhere.
If you're not bothered about keeping windows then as above the size really doesn't matter, Openelec uses very little space.

The only media i store is music files and they are on a USB hard drive. I don't store films or tv shows as i very rarely watch anything twice, so apart from kodi and dbpoweramp the other stuff is what came with Windows minus the bloatware. I've also done a fresh install, which didn't improve things any. There are probably more things i could trim or move if i had to.

I think 64GB would probably be enough, but if 128GB isn't much dearer, then i will get that. I don't want to spend a fortune on this stuff, because there's a point at which i may as well just buy a new unit, as they are not that expensive in the grand scheme of things. I do think it's worth having a go though and if i'm still not happy, i can always use the revo for my music storage.

Thanks to all.

Talking of storage and Windows, does Win 7 or 8.1 have built in at the OS level a hybrid SSD / HDD system like the Macs do with their Fusion Drive system ?

See this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ASUS-Chromebox-M...20f28a0b7d

I've dealt with the seller and he is 100% legit. You could write him (his ebay link is there) and see if he'll make another and ship to the UK. This is dual boot so you'll have a browser.

Such is the way of capitalism.

No good for me as i want a Windows OS. Think it's do-able on the Chromebox now but too much faff for me.

I'm thinking of buying a unit that ships with Windows 8.1 for my needs and using the Revo to mess around with and learn a bit more about how stuff works. Definitely going to upgrade the Revo as a first step. Never took apart a PC before but have done plenty of other mechanical and electrical deconstructing/reconstructing.

Like the look of the Zotac B1320 that ships with 8.1 but it's nowhere to be seen in the UK. Is there a similar box out there as good that ships with with Windows?

I think it's a D-series processor, though, so older technology than the Zotac - so I'm not recommending it, merely giving an idea that such beasts do exist if you search.

You also have the system builders, e.g. http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/intel-mini-pcs (other system builders are available - you may even have someone local to you who'd do it).
