I just started using the PVR functionality of Kodi (after years of Windows Media Center). I'm using NextPVR, but that shouldn't make a difference.

The availability of recording thumbnails depends on the PVR addon. If the recordings are stored on a different PC, it is the PVR addon's responsibility to transfer the thumbnails to the Kodi side.

As far as I can see in the NextPVR addon sources, it does learn Kodi an URL for the thumbnail.
(see the source lines with the URL formatting here).
So, in theory, it could work.

I would suggest to ask the NextPVR addon developer sub3 for advice in the NextPVR PVR addon subforum.
