We are looking at getting our 4 year old a box for his room. He can handle ours very well. We have a FreeNAS server with all our movies and shows. My only need is that is there something that can play Netflix easy for him? Maybe within Kodi? Don't want to have him running tons stuff to get running etc. want it easy for him.
Any prebuilt boxes? Just needs to be hdmi and 1080p.

Which Fire ?
Please be specific and detailed and don't use shorthand as we are not mind readers.
The Amazon Fire TV then is the best Android box that will suit your needs with Kodi and Netflix all on the one Home screen.

+1 Amazon Fire TV.
Second would be the Fire TV stick
Any of the above will also give you plenty of game options. So if your budget is $200, include a game controller if you go this route. If I were a 4yr old, I know I would love it!!!

I am also looking for a new Kodi Box (since my AppleTV2 is pretty much worthless and has been from the start). The only downside to the Amazon Fire TV is the lack of an IR blaster (i use harmony remotes). Any recommendations that include IR?

I was in your boat. The apple tv was great because of the remote. Its perfect for them size wise minimal buttons. So the fire tv makes a great choice for the same reason. But there is a flaw... they lose the remote all the time. If you can figure out how to stop them from doing that, then its gold.
I have had some success with cec with firetv too. I get the basics like dpad control, back, context menu dvd buttons. I don't know about adding advanced mappings. However, the basic is there so when the remote goes missing? there is still some hope!
Its too bad the ouya is out of stock or available at a $50-60 price range. Paired with a firestick remote, a game store, emulators, d-pad style based launcher. It would make a great all in one box for the kids.

If I were you and im assuming your son likes games...I would wait till May when the nvidia shield box comes out or go with the RAZR forge tv. Especially if your willing to spend 200. I have multiple set ups that I play with like amamazon fire TV( you will need to load the sideload app from the playstore or learn to sideliad with your PC.) The raspberry pi. ( cheap and does 1080p very well but the processing side is just too slow for me. Personally I prefer to use my old laptops in Linux but that's just me. If your looking for simple the nvidia looks like something that should work well for a couple years. Also the Logitech k400 works about as well for a media controller 18$
