Kodi goes to SCALE 13x (2015)
#1
If you live in Southern California, then you might want to head over to the Southern California Linux Expo, aka SCALE, February 19th to the 22nd. Kodi will have a booth there and our own Natethomas will be doing a presentation on Kodi.

For more information about SCALE, see http://www.socallinuxexpo.org

Feel free to make any suggestions about what we should do for the booth or what devices or features we should demo, etc.

Cut from the old post
Quote:I'll probably update this post with some better details in a bit here, but... the real reason I'm starting this thread is to get some feedback on some banners we're having professionally printed, hopefully having something to send to them by Monday (9th) or Tuesday (10th) Basically, we're trying to make the booth look a little more professional and snazzy. We're even getting a high class inflatable couch for the booth! (Inflatable so it fits in our bags for the airplane flight, and a couch in the first place to simulate a typical living room in the booth.) And we'll be able to use these banners at multiple events and all that.

We want to do at least two nice banners, one vertical (6.6' x 2') and one horizontal (2' x 6'). Da-anda started some graphics out here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2340...banner.pdf

What I want to do now is figure out how we can tastefully add a web address. Maybe even a small QR code (these kids and their QR codes, amiright?) or a list of the various social network accounts or something.

Feel free to suggest other designs as well. Even if we don't use them for SCALE, we're always looking for nice promotional material. It can be as simple as the name and logo, or even have some informational quality to it.

As mentioned in the first post, in addition to having a booth at SCALE, Nate Betzen (known on the forum as Natethomas) will be giving a talk about Kodi:

From XBMP to XBMC to Kodi: A Brief History of the Trials of a User-facing Media Center
Saturday, February 21, 2015 - 11:30 to 12:30 (PST)
http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale/13x/...dia-center

Previously SCALE has offered live streams of all the talks, so once we know what that URL is, you can tune in from anywhere and make Nate feel more nervous about how many people are watching ;)

EDIT: looks like they don't have any live streams of the talk this year, but ruuk is going to video tape the talk so we can post it online later.

If anyone on the other side of the Atlantic ocean was lucky enough to check out FOSDEM 15 last month, you had a chance to see a similar talk given by our own Kib and Martijn. I believe Kib plans on making a blog post about Team Kodi being at FOSDEM, and a copy of their talk will also be posted once FOSDEM puts those streams online, so be sure to check http://kodi.tv for those in the near future as well.

A little history, here's the group at SCALE 8x (2010):

We're bad at keeping records, and this was before I was with the group, so I don't know if XBMC/Kodi went to SCALE 9x (2011)

Here's the group at SCALE 10x (2012):

My files are horribly unorganized, but here's a still-frame from a video I took that shows off the XBMC booth at SCALE 11x (2013):

As you can see, our booth used to be pretty plane. 2013 was the first year I was involved, and I wanted to make 2014 a little better...

We were actually up against a big pillar, where another booth would normally be. So we basically took the pillar over and covered it in screen shots of all the different skins the community had made. We also put in a couch and a big TV to make it like a simulated "living room". We were able to show off XBMC v13 doing a lot of 3D stuff, and people were shocked to find out that a Raspberry Pi 1 was powering the main TV the vast majority of the time.

So we had some graphics and posters and such, but it was still very amateurish. At this time we knew we were going to be renamed, so we didn't want to have anything professionally printed up that wouldn't be usable the next year. For 2015 we hope (if they're made in time) our new banners will make us look like real pros. Or something like that ;)

I guess people will be even more shocked this year if you're thinking of demoing Kodi on the Pi 2!

We'll defiantly have a Pi 2 (two or three of them, I think) at the booth :D

I've just arrived: https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7390/16395...a4af_k.jpg

Much to do before Friday when the Expo hall opens.

ruuk, Keith, natethomas, and garbear are also coming and are still making their way here. While waiting for my checkin time for the hotel, I might just take a nap here in the booth. There's power and ethernet, who needs a hotel room.

SCALE 13x is now over. Pictures and video to come soon. Things were really great this year. Saturday was especially fun and really busy. Tons of people even knew us under the new name. The professional banners we ordered seem to have been lost in transit, but things still went pretty well and the booth looked fairly nice.

Will post more once I finally get some sleep, lol.
