The way I installed it was by first rooting my NP (not that this is necessary).

I then download ES File Explorer from the Play Store with the NP. On my computer, I then downloaded the Android x86 version of Kodi and uploaded that APK to my Google Drive (all from within my computer). Google Drive is supported in ES File Explorer, in case you were wondering.

Finally, I went back to my NP, opened ES File Explorer App, navigated to my Google Drive Folder within the "Cloud" tab, clicked on the APK for Kodi that I previously uploaded through my computer, and voila.

Rooting is definitely not necessary and I would suggest ads a variable that is unwelcome.

Go to security, allow 3rd party software
Go to your desktop computer
Go to play store
Select ES file explorer, select install, set the target install device to be your Nexus player.
Wait a few minutes for it to appear on your player.
On the player go to apps
Look for es file explorer.
Install.
Download kodi arm version.
Use es file explorer to locate the kodi install file.
Install.
Done.
