Win Interrupted sound
#1
Searching for solutions to a problem, I have seen others with same problem, and would like to share a solution that worked for me.
I have fought with interrupted sound in KODI (and other players) using HDMI to my receiver for quite some time. I now found the culprit.
Installing Power DVD 11 you automatically install the program pdvd11serv.exe. This program will start with every windows boot. This program (supposedly associated with some remote control) will ruin the sound by every 5-20 seconds halting the sound for several seconds.
What you have to do is either of course uninstall Power DVD entirely, or just remove pdvd11serv.exe from start (use msconfig). To be sure, you may also rename the program file.
Everything is now honky dory. I get smooth Dolby HD 7.1 and DTS HD 7.1 with no interruptions.

Windows 7 Pro 64
i7 990e
nvidia gtx 970
Harman Kardon AVR 255, 7.1 setup

Well - the success was shortlived. Not that the previous problem returned, it didn't, but I now have a new problem, After everything worked fine, KODI now doesn't recognize DTS HD 7.1. Such videos are only recognized as 5.1, and the receiver only gets a 5.1 signal - not even presented as DTS HD.
I would guess this has nothing to do with receiver or connections, as the signal is misinterpreted in KODI itself.
Suggestions anyone?

Don't want to say too much, but right at the moment, everything is working. Thought I had tried everything (but don't you always Smile ).
Following http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=...problem%22 I set sound card to exclusive mode in windows and chose wasapi as default passthrough device.

Update:
I now have interrupted sound in everything but HD. For a couple of seconds every 5-30 seconds.
Everything is wasapi, all capabilities on (no change if I turn them off). No change if I turn passthrough off.
AVR shows recognized format correctly as DTS or Dolby Digital (or other) - and recognizes the format after every hole in the sound. Same for files and discs.
Mind you, my HDMI cable is 15 meters, but if it handles HD formats fine, shouldn't it also do less demanding formats.
I have tried all sample formats for sound card, same same.
Any comment or suggestion is welcome.

Can you do a EDID override using moninfo and see if that fixes your issue?

Thank you for your answer. The whole EDID thing is new to me.
I installed MonInfo. I guess I should alter the raw data to suit the format from KODI?
But I see no missing correlation between the data in EDID and the formats the AVR should handle.
I have certainly misunderstood something there.

This is the sound-related data from the EDID:
CE audio data (formats supported)
LPCM 2-channel, 16/20/24 bit depths at 32/44/48/88/96/176/192 kHz
LPCM 6-channel, 16/20/24 bit depths at 32/44/48/88/96/176/192 kHz
LPCM 8-channel, 16/20/24 bit depths at 32/44/48/88/96/176/192 kHz
DVD-A 2-channel at 44/48/88/96/176/192 kHz
DVD-A 6-channel at 44/48/88/96/176/192 kHz

The EDID or rather the .inf file created should be that of which the AVR supports, or what it detect it supports. There shouldn't be a need to modify the file as far as I'm aware.

If HD content is still working as it should and you still have issues with SD content sound after the EDID, perhaps we need a little more info to resolve.
I.e. Debug log while playing content with sound issues
Screenshot of your playback settings and audio output settings

I don't quite get, what you mean by that, as I have changed nothing in the EDID.
Anyway, here is my settings and a logfile from playing a simple stereo file with lots of interruptions.

**Edit**
After changing audio output device and passthrough output device to WASAPI HDMI
here is the log: http//xbmclogs.com/peyyvh8vi

A: So you have performed an EDID override with the .inf exported and still have issues with either video or sound.

Use pastebin or similar for your log files (if you can edit your post and trim the log) as per forum rules.

Can you change the audio output device and passthrough output device to WASAPI HDMI
Should be along the lines of (NVIDIA HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO)

All good

Can you try "output configuration" "Fixed", and play with limit sample rate, possibly try @ 44.1kHz.
Also change the resample to medium
