Linux Total system freezes, fairly regularly
#1
Hi, I run gotham pretty much every day, in ubuntu 14.04 x86, and every couple of days the machine locks up where I can't do anything except hold the power button in until the computer shuts down.

I don't have anything interesting in the debug log today, but the next time it freezes I will be sure to grab that log on reboot and post it here.

I can, however, tell you that I'm running XBMC now, and when I run htop, the top two processes are both xbmc.bin. One is using 59% CPU and the other 29%, so 88% together. I have three more xbmc processes, each running .7%, which brings us up to 91% CPU.

All I'm doing is streaming a radio station right now. Doesn't this seem kind of high?

In general, any help debugging an issue like this, where the whole system locks up, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Ah, I do have a log from yesterday, when I did have a freeze up:

Starting XBMC from Debian (12.3 Debian package version:2:12.3+dfsg1-3ubuntu1)

Debian patched stonage version, utterly unsupported. Install a proper version from our PPA(s)

OK, thanks for the response. I did install the proper version, but I still get periodic crashes. Luckily, there have been a few times now when the screen spits out a bunch of information after freezing up, and I have uploaded three shots of the screen here: https://imgur.com/emtiQ1g,aKo9XKj,AcvTCs6#0

Also, one time it froze but I could still ssh into it. Usually I can't, but this time, I copied the output of dmesg, which you can see here: http://pastebin.com/idEqWmyT

I also saved my Xorg.0.log: http://pastebin.com/1JTYkxEr

So, hopefully, this is enough information to start to sort out what is going on with this machine. Thanks so much for your help.

Kernel bug -> you clearly see it in dmesg. Install a recent kernel and recent userspace. I really don't get at all why Multimedia Users even try to install a stable debian version .... run it on your server, but that's basically it ...
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

Thanks fritsch, I had already updated my kernel from 3.13 to 3.16. Now I'm up to 3.18 so we'll see if this fixes the problem.

As for installing a recent userspace: I could install liburcu1, a userspace RCU library.. but i don't know if this is what you mean. Basically, I'm not sure what you mean by a recent userspace. Are you talking about updating the OS itself? Thanks.

edit// that is to say, I understand the difference between userspace and kernel space, but I don't understand what is meant by 'install a recent userspace'.
