So the Fire TV and the fire stick have become pretty inexpensive and I'm thinking of getting one. My question is does one work better then the other when it comes to Kodi? Can they handle MKV, M4V, and AVI files?

Go for the box version. More horse power under the hood, and an Ethernet connection. In my experience, they both play MKV and AVI files just fine...haven't tried M4V, so I can't speak on that.
