Hello!
I was wondering if I can replace the hard drive in my 1st generation apple tv with an SSD? Will it work with any sataconnected ssd? Does it matter if its 3gbps or 6?
Thank you!

I just read that the first generation apple tv connects via PATA. Can I buy this and an msata to replace the HDD?

The IDE connector required is a 44 pin one, like what is found on Kingspec SSD's listed below

These are the SSD's that are a direct plug in replacement for the ATV1:

Kingspec 1.8" IDE PATA 128GB SSD for IBM X40 X41 X41T
Kingspec 1.8" IDE PATA 64GB SSD for IBM X40 X41 X41T

64GB KingSpec 2.5-inch PATA/IDE SSD Solid State Disk (MLC Flash) SM2236 Controller.
128GB KingSpec 2.5-inch PATA/IDE SSD Solid State Disk (MLC Flash) SM2236 Controller

Make that the notch in the middle of the IDE Connector is aligned the correct way up to the gap in the pins on the IDE connector on the SSD.

Your second option is the Micro SATA Cables - mSATA SSD to 44 Pin IDE Adapter as 2.5 Inch IDE HDD 5 Volt

You may get a marginal speed increase over the HDD as the ATV HDD interface can support ATA-100 which has a Max transfer speed of 100 MB/s. Access time may improve marginally.

Currently I get 62MB/s from my ATV / Samsung HDD during testing running Crystalbuntu.

If you have Crystalbuntu running on your ATV1, upgrade to Kodi 14.1 or Kodi 15.0 aka Isengard. This will give you a better Kodi speed boost than upgrading the HDD. Details here:

Use a pata to msata/m2 adapter instead. Youll find it on ebay, and it works fine.

To the OP, having found a better picture of that Ebay PATA/IDE to MSATA. Yes it is 44 Pin IDE/ATV1 compatible.

Just be very careful with the voltages. The 44 Pin IDE connector provides 5Volts for a 2.5" HDD and this needs to be stepped down to 3.3Volts for a MSATA SSD otherwise you will fry the SSD.

The following adapter definitely steps down the voltages correctly so you can use a cheaper 1.8" msata SSD.

Hi, I purchased the adapter you mentioned above using it with a 128gb msata drive and it doesn't seem to be recognized in the apple TV. Any suggestions?

I use that exact same adapter and an ADATA 32GB mSATA SSD running Crystalbuntu2 and Kodi Isengard on my ATV1. Mine was plug and play. Just be careful with the Fragile Adapter pins and the IDE cable/connector orientation.

I've never tried it with the original Apple Frontrow software.
