Amazon Fire TV USB update
#1
My findings using the latest update (51.1.5.0).
  • Kodi still runs perfectly fine.
  • Kodi also runs fine from a USB stick.
  • Media stored on a USB stick plays fine using Kodi.
Questions?

This is the best news i heard this week.
I wonder will my PS One games run from it (through a 3 port USB hub)
Did you get a preview or this this rolling out already?

Been out a few days. After I heard Kodi worked I unblocked the update site and it updated straight away.

Will it now take a USB hard drive instead of a USB flash stick. I have a 250gb spare knocking around.
I do see that it doesn't support NTFS but can format the HD to FAT32 so no big issue.

About USB Storage for Amazon Fire TV
Compatible external storage devices, the type of content that can be stored, and how it's managed..

You can use the USB port on your Amazon Fire TV to connect extra storage for games and apps. Movies, music, and photos are streamed to your device, so no extra storage is needed . You cannot access any media that you side-loaded onto the USB device.

USB Storage Requirements
Drive Type Flash drive
USB Version 3.0
Size 128 GB or smaller
File Format FAT 32

With USB storage attached, some games and apps will automatically install on the USB device, while others will install on-device. However, you can manually select specific games and apps to move to USB storage:
1. Go to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications.
2. Select the app you want to move and then Move to USB Storage.

Note: Some critical apps, like Amazon Appstore, cannot be moved to USB storage. Every game and app will use a small amount of space on your Amazon Fire TV internal storage, even if it is stored on your USB storage. You cannot move USB storage with Fire TV games and apps to another Amazon Fire TV device.

Yes, but it's not recommended as it's slower -

http://kodi.wiki/view/Path_substitution

Example 2 - changing where thumbnails are stored
Note:
This will slowdown thumbnail loading, but might be worth it for low-memory devices such as the ATV2.
Code:
<advancedsettings>
<pathsubstitution>
  <substitute>
    <from>special://profile/Thumbnails/</from>
    <to>PROTOCOL://YOUR_NETWORK_SHARE/xbmc/userdata/Thumbnails/</to>
  </substitute>
</pathsubstitution>
</advancedsettings>

It's in since a while: http://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Change_sett...or_Android

There also were a couple of recent threads about this if the wiki is not clear.

Is this slower like the other method?

Thanks.

EDIT: Just tried it out there's no speed difference that I can see. Big Grin

EDIT 2: Had it set up wrong before and now I've got it correct it's terribly slow using this method - to the point of Kodi hanging for up to a minute at a time just navigating through the menus.
