HOW TO - Configure & Add SMB/Samba Network shares
#1
Introduction

Kodi recommeds that file sharing is done using password protected shares thus this HOW TO only includes instructions on how to configure and connect to these types of shares. Use of SMB1 is also to be avoided as it carries serious security risks, however using SMB2/3 will mean loss of the ability of moist devices to be able to browse the network shares, thus manual configuration will be needed.

The settings here depend on what type of protection you want on your Shares.

We highly recommed the Secure Method detailed in Windows as a SMB Server - Part 2 - Secure Method/Windows as a SMB Server - Part 3 - Secure Method so if you going to use this method follow OPTION 1 below.

However it is possible to have passwordless protected shares as details in Windows as a SMB Server - Part 4 - Insecure Method so if you going to use this method follow OPTION 2 below.

OPTION 1 - For protected shares to use in Secure Method/Windows as a SMB Server - Part 3 - Secure Method

2- Windows as a SMB Server - Secure Method Part 1

2 - Create a local account

We recommend avoiding trying to use a Microsoft account to provide network sharing, so you need to create a password protected local account to only be used for accessing the shares. If you do already have a user local sccount then you can skip the create local account section, however we would not recommend that you do this, as this will result in normal user account passwords being shared across the network.

2.1. In Settings select Accounts

Image

2.2. Then select Family & other users on the lefthand side.

Image

2.3. Select Add someone else to this PC

Image

2.4. Select I don't have this persons sign-in information

2.5. Select Add a user without a Microsoft account

Image

2.6. Provide the username & password you wish to use for the local account
