Hello,
I have a Firetv an I'm considering buying a new one.
What's the status with these devices? Can you still root the newest version? Do you even need to root them?

I know you can sideload Kodi without rooting.

No, unless you get an old box, you can't root it.

Rooting brings some otherwise unobtainable features, such as being able to access larger USB drives, but most can happily live without it. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

The newer ones have the updated firmware and are not root-able.
To be honest, unless you are someone who likes to tinker, I don't see why you need root.

In don't use root on mine. Haven't really seen a reason to root either.
