With current git versions off kodi and tvheadend "records view" in live tv section show only flatten list. Prior to may 20 record view show records as hierarchical folder structure.

go to the side-menu in the recordings view and enable 'Group items'.
Do not PM or e-mail Team-Kodi members directly asking for support.

No, it's a bug.
Recordings don't play either.

Others with same problem - confirmed bug.

Looks like it's linked to this bug, which has been fixed on latest tvheadend release of a few days ago onwards - you will have to build from git though as of this post.
debs should be available within a couple of days apparently.

That's the bug, it had the consequence of causing the flattened recordings.

The grouping function has no effect here. Turning it on or off records are still flatten.

See post above, it's been fixed now.
It has nothing todo with the Kodi/XBMC addon. It's fixed now at source.
Latest available deb = not fixed though

Can you comment on the relevant tvheadend issue if this is still not fixed?

I hate to be the negative nancy especially when I'm a tvheadend and linux newb. I've recompiled again and so far existing recordings are not showing up in their folders as they should. I'm going to run a couple of recordings right now and see if those show up, and if they don't I'll update that bug.

In the meantime if anyone else is also seeing this or has some tips on what I might be failing to do here I'd be happy to hear it.

I don't see how the other bug mentioned here relates, but I've commented here:

Negge maybe you can weigh in because perexg seems to think it's a client issue.

Not a client issue.
Have been using 2.1.8 for past month with no issues.
Updated tvhesdend a couple of weeks ago, recordings flattened.
Still flattened even though with latest git build the recordings actually play

They are still flat I repeat this canot be a client issue.

I've posted there under "Rob Rob".
This is pretty easy to fix manually until they fix the bug, go to recording tab and check out the new "full pathname specification" entery, you'll see it's not updating to show that directories should be created.
I deleted contents of field, reload, then ticked box to create directories..seems to be showing correct format now...

%F/$t$n.$x

Instead of

$t$n.$x

(top one creates directories per day)

The "bug" at this point is that it's simply not migrating over settings from earlier install and being a little weird with accepting new (old) setting.

...Actually no still screwed.
Although recordings now going in proper directories again, still appear flat in Kodi / addon 2.1.8
If this is the fault of the addon then it's a shortcoming that tvheadend has exposed around 4.1.18 build as addon 2.1.8 has been working perfectly fine until then.
