Android Nvidia Shield Android TV (Updated Jan 26 2017 - 5.0 update)
#31
I intend to buy Nvidia... but appreciate if anyone helps me with the information about Dolby/DTS playback. Does Kodi on Nvidia Sheild will play DTS/Dolby mkv files?

With ES File Explorer on the Nexus Player I was able to browse my network just fine, on the SHIELD it's not seeing my network servers or shares at all. Anyone have any recommendations on how to get this to work? I've got unRAID running with Samba shares, it should just show up as near as I can tell.

As already discussed but still not answered here http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=220297

What about true native 23.976 Hz output when playing 23.976p videos in the future, will the Nvidia Shield Console hardware and be able to handle that on Android with firmware updates?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24p#23.976p

Or will it only ever be capable of 24p Hz output via 3:2 pulldown schemes for playback of 23.976 FPS videos? This is one of the most common question about high-end video players.

Same native Hz output question goes for frame rates 23.98p, 29.97p, 50i, 59.94i, 59.94p, 60i, and 60p which are all commonly used, but not as frequent used as 23.976p FPS.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-defini...n#Notation

Surely the Nvidia graphics hardware inside the chipset and GeForce drivers most be capable out 23.976p or? And if so could that mean the limitation is only in Android or the firmware?

Would that issue really be impossible for Nvidia to workaround for this first version of the Shield Console and resolved via future firmware updates if users express the need for it?

23.976p, 24p, 25i, 29.97i, 30i, 50p, 59.94p, 60p and more frame rates are even part of the Blu-ray specification for native video encoding

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray#Video

Blu-ray movies with 24p frame rate are actually rare, as most using 23.976p frame rate.

Yes, Koying = SPMC.
The existing builds of SPMC that are available on http://spmc.semperpax.com is currently based on the older but stable Kodi 14.2 (Helix).

However it looks like he's working on updating SPMC to be based on code from Kodi 15.0 (Isengard) https://github.com/koying/SPMC/commits/isengard

Anyway, the test builds for the Nvidia Shield Console that you want to use is based on the newer Kodi 15.0 (Isengard) Beta/RC code tree.

I'm sure that the advice will be to stick with tests builds here http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=228361 for now, right?

Honestly when a TV was marketed with "24p" support that was supposed to represent 23.976

When people say something supports 24p I automatically assume they are talking about 23.976 or one less decimal place of precision

When android does 24.000, I'm not sure where that limitation comes from. I have no real knowledge of android video limitations or details other than simple stuff like it was initially 30fps everywhere until project butter made headway to 60fps. The focus in it's early life was clearly nice transitions and animations for competition in the mobile space rather than perfect video for the living room.

It's nice that nvidia and Intel have moved into android, because there are at least parts of their teams that addressed the needs of video purists over the past decade

All that being said I think we are getting into gray areas referring to 24.000 as 24p since to most people familiar with marketing (which is all most of us are really familiar with anyway) think different things

Also, has anyone used game stream yet? What latency is it delivering wired?

I guess that is something you need to ask in the other thread http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=220297 or on Nvidia's own forums https://forums.geforce.com/default/board/159/

Offtopic anyway as it is not a Kodi related question.

I guess I asked it here, and since you don't know you can ignore the question. Since neither this thread or the one in hardware are development threads they don't need any moderation, especially from another casual user feeling some odd compelling need to try and moderate rather than simply ignore a question that doesn't pertain to anything they have interest in

@Dark_Slayer Gamestream in definitely unrelated to the "Kodi for Android" forum.
Your question surely belongs to the "Hardware" thread, if any.

Well we all know where that eventually ends up http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=...pid1762227

I would guess everyone just woke up on the ridiculous side of the bed this morning, but then I remember that all the attitudes here are why this forum sucks and always has. Everyone pretending as if you literally need to read a freakin forum dissertation explanation just to start a small discussion about something. I didn't start a new thread, don't intend to spam every thread annoyingly, and no longer expect to discuss anything around here. Every few months I forget this and come back for a little while until it's reminded again

Also, OMG I'm not asking a specific Kodi support question, and since the world is ending and everyone's arse will explode please delete this whole post before kodi.tv melts down completely

Jeez I have such a love hate relationship with the fantastic software and overtly egregious community around it

Err... Why not just follow the basic rules Wink
Not sure why you want to heat this thread just because we ask you to post in the proper place...

Yep, sorry I apologize. I have nothing but admiration and appreciation for the work you and the other devs do. The forum/community and I are just a bad fit. Forum hecklers please relax and don't let any heads explode, this should be my last O/T post, thanks again

Koying would probably know the answer.
Its possibly related to a lack of a video reference clock, I'm not sure.

But as Koying has already stated in the other NVIDIA Shield Hardware thread, this device is NOT recommended for Kodi 24p - perfect video sync purists. You get the same limitation with the Shield as with virtually all other Android OS based devices. Which is pretty disappointing from a pure Kodi media playback perspective. Confused

A potential purchaser should get a supplemental RPi2 or a Chromebox if 3:2 pulldown judder annoys the hell out of you. It does me.
It seems the NVIDIA Shield at this time is not the all in one Holy Grail media box the headlines suggest. We are not there yet.
It would be nice to be proven wrong.Wink
