Require help installing Kodi on my ATV1
#1
Hello all

The last time I touched my ATV1 was back in 2011 where I was able to use a USB and install XBMC.
Now I want to update it to the latest Kodi version for my ATV1.
From what I understand I can't install Kodi 14.2 on my ATV1.
Am I right in thinking that I should install Kodi 13.1 Gotham on my ATV1?
I've been trying to find a solution, but seem to be going round in circles without any progress.
Can someone please point me in the right direction.
I'm still a newbie & would appreciate a step by step guide or links.

Thank you in advance.

Here's an unofficial v14 that you can use: http://forum.osmc.tv/showthread.php?tid=16811

You only need that if you have the BCHD card. If you don't, then you can actually install the normal v14 on top of an old Crystalbuntu 2 install.

Hello Ned

Thanks for your reply.

I've gather some additional information about my setup.
ATV1 160GB
My iOS has both XBMC & Boxee options
Launcher 3.2.5
XBMC v11.0 Eden
Software Version 3.0.2
I don't have a BCHD card

Would you know if I'm running Cystalbuntu in the first place?
How would I go about updating from here? Please be specific as I'm a newbie.
I'm getting over whelmed by all the other ppl questions/responses that I don't know what applies to me.

Thanks heaps
Rick

You are running a very old version of XBMC, it is not Crystalbuntu.

The only way to get Kodi on to your ATV1 is to download the following 40GB Crystalbuntu HDD image from this post:

https://discourse.osmc.tv/t/can-anyone-s...or/2527/51

Then follow instructions to dd the image to the ATV1's Hard Drive, overwriting what you have. You will lose the Apple Frontrow OS.
The Apple Frontrow OS you are running currently is able to be recovered should you change your mind.

First, OpenElec must be running from a usb stick as that is needed to install the HDD image:
http://wiki.openelec.tv/index.php/HOW-TO...stallation

dd Instructions:
https://discourse.osmc.tv/t/can-anyone-s...or/2527/63

Kodi (Crystalbuntu) Upgrade Links:
https://discourse.osmc.tv/t/can-anyone-s...or/2527/85

Sounds complicated, You bet !

If its all too complicated the successor to Crystalbuntu called OSMC is nearly ready for the ATV1. That will come with simple install instructions....

Thanks for your reply wrxtasy

I'll look into that tonight when I get home.
Would the 40GB image limit my 160GB to 40GB?

Do you know how far off OSMC is due? (month, 6mth or a year?)

Thank you so much for helping me out.

Yes 40GB will be the limit with the 40GB image, but then if all your media files are on a Network or a HDD that connects to the ATV1, its not an issue. Crystalbuntu does not need much space to run at all. 720p files run reasonably well even with no CHD card installed.

I briefly played around with expanding it out to 160GB but ran out of patience.

OSMC for the ATV1, maybe a month or two. I think Sam Nazarko is working on the bootloader at the moment, which I believe is one of the last of the jobs needed before OSMC / Kodi / ATV1 release.

Thanks wrxtasy

I've got a NAS so the HDD is not a big issue.
Now I want to explore streaming.
720p is good enough for me, as my TV is the same.

I'll give it a go tonight & tomorrow & will keep you posted.

Thank you

Note is you add all manner of add-ons to the ATV1, that has only 256k of RAM it will slow down Kodi on the ATV1.
This is particularily true of the badly written Banned Addons that I do not use nor will not even mention.

Thanks for the heads up.
So far I've managed to get ATV1 to boot into XBMC 13.2 from the ATV HDD.
Do I miss DD the image to the ATV HDD because I chose the hdd.image.gz and not the usb.img.gz?
if so I believe my next step is to Putty into the ATV1.

I'm up to Kodi (Crystalbuntu) Upgrade Links::
Kodi 14.2 Helix Final....
http://forum.osmc.tv/showthread.php?tid=17422

This is where i'm stuck on my Putty cmd line:
OpenELEC:~ # sudo wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2764...ystalbuntu
%20ATV1/Kodi14.2.Install.sh && sudo chmod 755 Kodi14.2.Install.sh && sudo ./Kodi
14.2.Install.sh
There is no working 'sudo'.
On debian/ubuntu/all general purpose linux distributions 'sudo'
allows a permitted user to execute a command as the superuser
or another user, as specified by the security policy
With OpenELEC you have root access by default, so you dont need 'sudo'
OpenELEC:~

I've removed sudo from the line but it still fails?

Please let me know if I've missed something.

Thanks

Stumbled and tripped at the first hurdle, but Congrats you have OpenElec running on the ATV1's HDD.
This will not help if you want to install Kodi.

Quote:First, OpenElec must be running from a usb stick as that is needed to install the HDD image:
This one:
usb.img.gz

Also the dd instructions will need to be executed from Putty on the machine that is actually running Putty. Do not ssh into the ATV.
You dd the Crystalbuntu.img over the local Network FROM your PC, TO the ATV's HDD. It will take approx 2 hours over Ethernet only.

You will have to work out and modify /path/of/local/ATV.img.bz2 to point to the actual source path of the ATV.img.bz2 on your PC.

Thanks for the guidance.

I initially had problems creating the boot disk, as my first 2 usb's didn't work on the ATV1.
I'll give it another go tonight.

Thanks again.

Hello

I'm stuck again.
Does it make a difference if I'm using Win7 on my laptop instead of MAC or Linux?

I've recreated the USB boot disk using usb.img.gz - ok
Started the ATV1 using the new usb.img.gz boot - ok
After booting, I can browse using http:\\IP from my laptop
I can PuTTY into the ATV1 on IP address on port 22..... But NOTED how you said NOT to ssh into the ATV1!!
Having troubles transferring the CB2.img to the ATV1
I thought I would try "Bonnie_Raitt" approach from another post, where he transferred the CB2.img to /storage on the ATV1 using Filezilla.....but i'm getting the following error with FileZilla :

Status: Connecting to 192.168.1.13:21...
Status: Connection attempt failed with "ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused by server".
Error: Could not connect to server
Status: Waiting to retry...

Should my DD look like this in PuTTY because of my windows local dir?
dd if=C:\Users\Len\Desktop\AppleTV1\crystalbuntu2.img.bz2 | bzip2 -d | ssh [email protected] "dd of=/dev/sda"

My initial Storage information (with the HDD.img stuffup) was:
Size Used Avail Use Mounted on
/dev/sdb1 200M 128.2M 71.8M 64% /flash
/dev/sdb2 145.9G 71.6M 138.4G 0% /storage

But my CURRENT Storage information on the ATV1 is as now...... after using usb.img.gz
Size Used Avail Use Mounted on
/dev/sdb1 512.0M 269.1M 242.9M 53% /flash
/dev/sdb2 3.1G 11.0M 2.9G 0% /storage
/dev/sdb2 145.9G 71.6M 138.4G 0% /var/media/STORAGE

Pleases help.
Thanks

Something is going on with Putty, it should be connecting to the ATV1 on Port 22. (:22)
Check what port you have configured in the Putty program.

Putty is connecting fine.....it's Filezilla that's not connecting on 192.168.1.13:21

Can you pls check my DD if I am to use Putty?
dd if=C:\Users\Len\Desktop\AppleTV1\crystalbuntu2.img.bz2 | bzip2 -d | ssh [email protected] "dd of=/dev/sda"

When I use the DD line from above, I get the following message.

OpenELEC:~ # dd if=C:\Users\Len\Desktop\AppleTV1\crystalbuntu2.img.bz2 | bzip2 -
d | ssh [email protected] "dd of=/dev/sda"
dd: can't open 'C:UsersLenDesktopAppleTV1crystalbuntu2.img.bz2': No such file or directory

This is the problem when you are not a Windows user.... working in a Linux enviroment.

PuTTY is only a terminal. It doesn't execute commands on the local Windows machine, only forwards them to a (remotely running) shell. That being Linux/OpenElec on the ATV1.

So we are on the same page, download Cyberduck for Windows, its far easier to use for file transfers.
https://cyberduck.io/?l=en

Then SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) connect to OpenElec running from the usb stick. Cyberduck will use Port 22 by default.
You will need a usb stick that can store the crystalbuntu2.img.bz2 file size. Otherwise this will not work at all.

Using Cyberduck the crystalbuntu2.img.bz2 file has to be dragged into the folder /storage
You then issue this command in Putty at the command prompt OpenELEC:~ #
Code:
dd if=/storage/crystalbuntu2.img.bz2 | bzip2 -d | dd of=/dev/sda

Feet up, this will take a couple of hours.

Wait for the command prompt in Putty, then pull the Power cord and reboot to Crystalbuntu.

Then upgrade to Kodi Helix:

After that you may like Kodi Isengard Alpha2:
