Sony have added a media player app to PlaySation 4, opens way for Kodi port?

Sony have now added its own dedicated media player app to the PS4 game console which supports a number of popular file formats from local USB storage and over network, checkout:

If now Sony allow a such type of media players to exist on the PS4, do you think that they might be more open to also allow a Kodi application port if someone was interested to port it?

Another argument is that Plex for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 have now been available as an app on PS3 and PS4 for almost 6-month now, so would they refuse a Kodi port?

Wanted to discuss here whether or not Sony as a company would even allow and approve an app like Kodi if a such was submitted, and not asking for the Kodi team to do the porting.

I think that it would be awesome if we someday would run Kodi or a fork of Kodi on modern game consoles the PS4 and Xbox One, just imagine the potential user-base expansion.

from the wiki:

Quote: 1.10 Can I install Kodi on a PS3/4, Xbox360/One, or Wii/U?

* Nope. The required reverse engineering (to get access to the video acceleration hardware, among other things) has typically not happened on any of these game consoles. Further more, no one on Team Kodi has expressed an interest in attempting to port Kodi to those platforms, which would be a huge undertaking.

I believe that statement is old and the first part is very probable to no longer be valid. Sony have introduced new indie-oriented development tools for the PS4 since that statement was made. You can probably understand that even large companies such as Sony (and Microsoft) need to evolve with the times now that Android and iOS gaming is eating into their business.

Regardless, it is would surely not be impossible to port Kodi to the PS4 anymore today, and again the question was not about the Kodi teams interest in doing the porting themselves.

Sony (and Microsoft) on indie development seems have changed over the last couple of years, and it looks like they might now be more open to accept third-party apps. You do have to become a licensed PS4 developer to get official access to the full PlayStation 4 SDK suite for development on but doing so should be free to organizations like the XBMC Foundation .

My question that I want discuss here was specifically the concern if you guys think that Sony would even approve an app such as Kodi is someone did make the effort to port it to PS4?

Allowing file formats to be played is a long way from allowing something like Kodi on their hardware. I don't think Sony would ever approve a third party app for playing back files.

Well they do allow Plex, and registering as a developer one on their main interest area option say "TV, VIDEO AND OTHER NON GAME APPLICATIONS DEVELOPER / PUBLISHER ONLY":

Plex is closed source, we are not. Until they let open-source application in i think this discussion is just guessing and not for the interest of the team.
