New to live TV and questions

I've been running Kodi for years and cut the cord from DirecTV a few months ago. Toda I finally got an indoor antenna and now have all my had locals. Since I have only just how done this, I know nothing about live TV support in Kodi.

I read that the Silicon Dust tuner is by far the best one out there. Can I just buy one and be able to set it up with Kodi? Also, does Kodi act as a DVR at all so I can automatically record my shows? Also is there an on screen guide?

Lastly, will all of this work on OpenElec or do I need to switch to Windows?

Yes but you also need to setup/configure a PVR backend too as a separate software application.

Suggest that you first read this guide about PVR in the wiki to start with => http://kodi.wiki/view/PVR

Not yet via Kodi's GUI, they are working on it for future versions of Kodi (think 16.x), though you can always do it today directly via web interface to the PVR backend.

Yes of course, in PVR terminology it is called an EPG (Electronic Program Guide)

All PVR client addons work in OpenELEC. OpenELEC even comes with Tvheadand and VDR as full PVR backends, see:

Thanks Rocker! I ordered from Amazon a SiliconDust HDHomerun Connect.

Looks like a nice product and they say they have a Kodi addon. I think it does the PVR work and will function well in Kodi? Anyone else use one of these>

Only thing is I am positive my 128GB SSD won't be nearly enough. Probably going to have to put in a 2TB HD.

In anticipation of my HD Homerun coming tomorrow, I installed the Homerun addon in Kodi (Isengard beta 2). When I try to enable live TV, it tells me that no PVR addon is installed and turns it right back off. So, I went to addons but I can't find any category for PVR. What do I have to add and how do I do it to get Kodi working with the Homerun? I thought the Homerun addon was all I needed. Do I need some separate PVR addon? Why is there no live TV or PVR category in addons?

Also, I have a Synology NAS. Is there any PVR software I can install on it that will work with Kodi and my Homerun?

OK I am slowly figuring things out. I installed the dvblink package on my Synology NAS and enabled the addon in Kodi. Where it has the field for server address, do I just put in the base address of my NAS which is 192.168.1.10? Or do I need anything after it like 192.168.1.10:xxxxx?

That non-PVR addon they mention doesn't have the PVD/DVR recording functionality, instead it only offers live streaming as it don't use Kodi's PVR API which aren't standard add-ons.

For real PVR/DVR you really need to read and follow => http://kodi.wiki/view/PVR and http://kodi.wiki/view/PVR_backend

You must have a PVR backend (server-side) such as example Tvheadend or DVBLink to get recording functionality, and see => http://kodi.wiki/view/PVR and http://kodi.wiki/view/PVR_backend

That is, there is no PVR client addon that can connect directly to a SiliconDust HDHomerun which is just a tv-tuner, you will need to have a PVR backend software in the middle.

Once you have the separate PVR backend software setup somewhere on you network and configured for SiliconDust HDHomerun then you install the PVR client addon for that backend.

Silicondust is also working on a PVR backend software on their own, checkout => http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1275...e-imagined

Don't have a of-the-shelf NAS but you can either install Tvheadend or DVBLink on a Synology NAS, but read http://kodi.wiki/view/Tvheadend_PVR and http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=141981

Awesome Rocker, thank you! I did a lot of research l last night and found the dvblink package for my Synology NAS and installed it. Just waiting for the tuner to come in today and then I can test with Kodi. The only minor issue I can foresee is that if I want to watch a particular channel or record something and then rabbit ears are not set right for that channel, I have to get up and adjust it, or worse not get my recorded show. I wonder if there are any indoor antennas that save antenna settings for channels.

EDIT: That Kickstarter project looks great. I see the different prices but don't see a way to pay. Any idea how to do it?

OK I finally have everything working except for the epg. In dvblink setup on my NAS, there is a section for epg sources and a field for xmltv source. It looks like I am supposed to put a link in there but I have no clue what to put. Anyone able to tell me? Right now, if I bring up the epg in live TV it does show some info but it is just a text list with no times or anything. I've seen screenshots where it looks like a graphical grid similar to satellite and cable boxes. How do I get that?

In dvblink, if you navigate to The channels tab, then Click on epg sources, you should see a list of channels on the left hand side of the screen. On the rhs should be an available epg sources tab. In the drop down, select The tuner card. Then back on the left hand side Under "automatic epg assignment" try clicking on "by name" or "by number". It should then auto match the channel to an epg source. Give it a while to sync, then reset the pvr database and your epg should show up.
