Here was the resolution: the Fire TV stick was bunk.
I should have known it was the stick when it kept losing my wifi connection or when it was connected it would say, "connected with problems." Then I really started suspecting the stick when I could ping it, but then it would go in an endless scroll and say the host was down after it pinged once. (See above terminal log for an example).
Luckily, I had bought two. I had intended one for my Dad for father's day, but I guess he will be getting a gift certificate instead.
Just a note: I bought both of these new from Best Buy last night. The first one I tried and failed so hard with was apparently a total POS, because the second one worked just fine and went off without a hitch. So, if you buy one and it gives you the problems I had, and there is no other explanation of the problems, and you have tried every single work around and trick you could do, chances are you've got a crappy Fire TV.
