I might have got the wrong end of the stick completely, but it sounds as though your pc is outputting just by HDMI, and the amazon box is extracting audio from that and sending it to your receiver?
In which case it's nothing to do with the pc - you either need to find a way to stop audio passing through the amazon box to your tv, or mute your tv.
Have I misunderstood?

I imagine the only option is to mute your TV (as suggested by troggy) or return the unit and get a USB sound card with SPDIF.
Amazon are usually very good for returns and a USB SPDIF adapter may be cheaper?

That sort of thing would work if you only want 5.1.
Just check whatever you buy (if you do) comes with drivers for Windows 8.

I don't, sorry. I'm limited to 5.1 by my amp (and my wallet). Until recently I used a (very) old usb creative soundblaster to give 5.1 with windows 7, and that worked flawlessly.
Edit: quick google says toslink only does 5.1.

thanks, probably same here to be honest as my amp is 13 years old! Will look into the usb soundcard solution then.
Thanks again for the help everyone.
