DSF, DFF not playing or with drops
#1
Hi,

Build #0701
For the first time I tried DSF and DFF files stereo and multichannel.
AFAIK it should play fine but it doesn't.
Stereo have drops and multichannel are very badly playing.
Samples from:
http://www.cybele.de/geraete-software-download
Bottom of the page, 3 DSD files

Log:

Please could you let me know what file format It should play and what not.
Thanks

I could only download the last two, Cybele_SACD_030802_DSD_Surround_11.dsf (11.dsf) and Cybele_SACD_AB001_DSD_Surround_05.dsf (05.dsf), as the first file is offline.

The first track, 11.dsf, plays OK on a Pi2, although the CPU is quite high, 40-50% on three cores with a fourth core at 90%.

The second track, 05.dsf, plays poorly on the Pi2 and the CPU load is even higher - hitting 100% on one core with the other three cores about 40-50%

It looks like this is a CPU issue, so perhaps not surprising these files don't play well on a Pi1 - if you run top or bcmstat.sh you should see that your CPU load is 100%.

I've got other DFF/DSD files where the CPU load is generally lower, 20-25% across each of the four cores, however these are stereo (not surround) and consequently lower bitrates, which may explain why they play without a problem:

It may be the case that DSD files (with any number of channels) require too much CPU to play well on a Pi1, and that surround-sound DSD files may also be too much for a Pi2.

You can find the first file in this link
http://www.hd-klassik.com/test-downloads

When I play stereo _15.dsf file, I have 80-86% CPU with top and a drop every 2-3 seconds
When I play surround_11.dsf file, I have 74-76% CPU with top, no sound at all and counter tics 1 second every 3-4 seconds.
When I play surround_11.dsf file, I have 73-74% CPU with top, sound drop 4-6 times per second and counter tics 1 second every 3 seconds.

So, the workaround is, or choose another format (FLAC) or transcode to FLAC, then wait for the Pi3.

If you bring up the codec info for these files you will see they are handled as 8 channel @ 352kHz.
That is a massive data rate, and is almost certainly too much for your Pi1.

On a quick test I think they play okay on Pi2 with buffermode=1 and resample quality set to low.
