official Hulu and Netflix add-ons would already be possible right now, but it requires these companies to work with us because of their DRM stuff. And no, the main intention of integrating CEF is not Hulu and Netflix support, as CEF does not have the required closed source DRM module that Chrome has. Main focus is on integrating a browser and add-ons that can trigger a specific URL. At some point maybe even HTML5 add-ons, but this is a long road to go.

It would require at least additions of EME (Encrypted Media Extensions) support for encrypted media support and CDM (Content Decryption Module) client key from Netflix.

The first could maybe be added by open source developers, but the second part, decryption keys/agents, would require endorsement from Netflix for legal implementation.

What is holding them back from giving that to the Kodi project? Not a big enough user base, not a commercial project, association with piracy? Has anyone asked?

If encryption keys are included in a piece of open source software, the keys are effectively released into the wild and neither of those companies would ever agree to that.

They could make a binary add-on. Or just a binary blob in an add-on.
