Hi,

I installed Kodi via the noobs install image which was working fine until yesterday when an automatic update was downloaded and installed. It hung on 100% for a few hours so I ended up manually rebooting the pi and now it doesn't work at all. Just a blank screen :-(

Is there a way to recover it or do I need to reinstall it from scratch?

It would help if you mention what you installed...
NOOBS does not say that, you need at least to specify the operating system you loaded.
