Looking for an Linux/ Openelec Media Box
#1
Hey Guyz,

I've been reading up on various TV boxes, but i just can't seem to find right one,
maybe it just doesn't exist yet but i'm looking for an TV media box that can

HW decode HEVC/H265 10-bit @4K 60 FPS
Runs Linux/Openelec (can only find Android)
Has Gigabit LAN

At first a RK3288 based Media Box seemed like the right choice, but
it seems the HEVC decoding part doesn't work well on linux.
It also is unclear to me if it can decode the 10-bit profile or if it's limited at 4K@30 fps

AMLogic upcomming S912 based SoC seems interesting too but,
since it's not even out yet it's unknown if Linux will be supported

So i'm a bit at a loss, is there anything i missed

Hi @Nilink, have you read the FAQ: what hardware to get for 4K thread?

Some Kodi users have reported issues with the RK3288 so not sure how viable is it.

If you really want Linux/Openelec I believe your best option available now is to build a box with the NVIDIA GTX 960 (it's probably worth asking about how good linux/kodi support is).

If you can skip the Linux/Openelec requirement then you have the NVIDIA Shield Android TV available which has received very good reviews. The caveat is that currently it doesn't support 23.976pfs output nor HD Audio bitstream but both are being addressed by NVIDIA.

Is there even 10bit HEVC stuff about yet ? Its very CPU intensive just to encode 8bit. Netflix are either trialling 8bit/10bit and some TV stations I think in Europe may be test broadcasting. I would let a new TV purchase handle that decoding, like the new Sony's just released.

I personally would not be buying expensive hardware just to support 10bit. Concentrate on valued movie playback features like properly synced 23.976/59.94Hz video output and Dynamic refresh rate switching first. And avoid Android if you can until all limitations are sorted out. Buying on promises often lets users down.

8bit HEVC decoding in both Kodi 15.1RC - Ubuntu and OpenELEC is possible. I'm using such a device now. My personal unofficial OpenELEC 6.0 is impressively quick and slick. Smile

stay away from rk3288

hd audio not really working
some one report bad video quality or stutter

Thank you all for the quick replies, I guess. i'll have to wait a while longer as NVIDIA is too closed source. I'll put my hopes on the AMlogic S912 for now

S812 is better, ATV1900AC maybe a good candidate.

I would only trust MINIX, HardKernel, Wetek or NVIDIA - once they get their Firmware sorted out. If shopping in the Android Market space. Firmware Support is absolutely vital for Android and AMlogic SoC's are definitely preferred at this point in time.

The OP has asked for a HEVC 10-bit solution and the S812 only supports 8-bit. I'm not sure about the ATV1900AC but from its product page it doesn't seem to support 10-bit either.

I tried an RK3288 box. i have not noticed any audio problems. 4K HEVC @ 60 FPS samples seem to work fine 4K AVC @ 60 FPS samples are poorly played back

Still think i'll get another one for myself but the S905 is still not available never mind the S912
I'm currently reviving an old Cubieboard2 but i'm running into problem after problem

Both Kodi 15.1 Isengrad as well as SPMC as well as stock player(based on Kodi 15) play 4K AVC @ 60 FPS poorly
