I have no problem with openelec build. So it seems to be an arch-specific bug.

Kodi generally builds all dependent libraries explicitly and links with these internal libraries.
i.e. it does not use ffmpeg, sqlite, curl, openssl from the distribution.

Historically there has been a conflict between kodi and debian, for example, as debian refuses to ship packages with internally built libraries - they must use the libraries from distribution.
However Kodi just doesn't tend to work with versions of libraries it hasn't been tested with.
Most libraries are patched too, which means system libraries won't behave the same way.

One possibility is Arch is using system libraries that are not compatible with Kodi and that is causing the issue.

Arch guys seems (here) to think that it may be related to gcc5.
For now, I will stay with open elec.
