hello everyone, unfortunately i was afk for over a month, but I want to thank for the quick and constructive response. what a great community. setting vda hardware decoding to false in the settings menu of kodi (why not use it when its there 
) seem to have solved the problem in exchange for missing hardware acceleration. if i remember correctly, kodi 15.0 was still running fine with vda=true, so the issue was most likely introduced with kodi 1.5! if it helps, i can downgrade to provide more information. also, if you need gfx card and os information, I'm happy to help so that problem can get solved. just let me know what you need and thanks again for the nice help.
