So how can I turn up the volume in Kodi on my Pi 2 if I'm only able to control the device with the Kore Android App? It's on mute, and for the life of me, I can't get the phone remote to access the volume.

Sorry I'm not sure what the Kore Android app is.
You could try using Yatse, I use it and know it has the feature your after.

You can control the volume using the appropriate icons on the now playing screen, or using your phone's volume keys (make sure that the option "Set volume using volume keys" is set in the settings)
