Dell Optiplex 7010 - onboard Video Card questions + more
#1
Hello all,

Recently inherited a Dell Optiplex 7010 from work - I've always used boxed, commercial products like a AFTV, or Apple TV for Kodi setups, so this would be my first foray into using a PC.

Intel ® Core ™ i5-3470 CPU @ 3.2 GHz
4 GB RAM
32-bit Operating System
Windows 7 (could upgrade to 8 if there if this would improve Kodi experience)

I'm looking to strictly plug in a few external hard drives of my backed up DVD/BLU collection, mostly x264 720/1080p mkv rips, with 5.1 sound. Will also be streaming Netlix, Amazon Prime, etc. (Wired LAN connection).

There is a DisplayPort that I will use a Display Port to HDMI for video - if I'm reading around correctly this should accommodate the 5.1 audio as well. The onboard video card is listed as "Intel HD Graphics"

I've read the minimum requirements, and I'm certain this box will be more than enough to do what I am aiming for - should this be ok as far as Kodi's menu is concerned (Eminence skin)? (1300 or so movies, around 100 TV Series). Would also function as a Media Server for a wireless AFTV Kodi setup.

Thanks all and apologies if this is vague...

You should have a free upgrade to Windows 10 waiting for you on this. No need to purchase Windows 8. The specs are more then enough for 1080p 5.1 audio playback. Heck slap in a dedicated GPU and you have a sweet gaming rig.

From my understanding DP has no problem handling HD Audio.

That's more power than you'll need so no need to change anything except maybe add another 4gb of RAM just because you can.
