When I used Windows 8, I just did alt-tab. But if you have windows 10, take advantage of the virtual desktops.

gets you straight to the desktop... use it all the time!

All I do is press the Windows Key, which is then enough to pop up the taskbar.
A fancy trick is to put all your common programs on the taskbar. And then launch them with WINDOWS KEY + Number
Example: Firefox, VLC, File Explorer, etc. Then WINKEY+1 will launch Firefox, WINKEY+2 will launch VLC, WINKEY+3 launches File Explorer, and so on.
