Stutter and catchup
#1
Hi All

i have the latest Kodi on my laptop. Ive noticed sometimes when playing video the film seems to pause for a moment then go into fast forward for a second to catchup then continoue playing as normal. I know its not a buffering issue is it happens with streams and local films, the streams are getting 2M+ per seconds so it cant be buffering.

any ideas?

Thanks,

I am seeing this issue as well, and thought it was my system.

The same occurred in both 15.1 and now in 15.2 (Windows 7 x64 with 6 gig memory)

I get it on a handful of bluray isos. Do you have any logs so we can compare issues? It may be the same thing I am seeing?

I see now more and more people are noticing.
Confirm that this problem does not happen using an external player like MPCHC or Kodi versions prior to Isengard.
If so, you all probably have the same problem.

I had to roll back to 14.2 because of that very same issue. The issue is not a buffering issue, it seems more like the video is trying to catch up as Slihp has accurately described.
This has happened with every version of 15(from the rc) . I sadly gave up on 15.x. I have never experienced this issue with 14.x.

Most likely this won't change for 16.0 because all the work on video player slipped to 17. I don't build and test on Windows myself so I don't know the current state for this platform. I'll reach out for a Windows dev and hopefully we can provide builds for testing soon.

Sounds good. I'll be happy to try test builds and will watch for future thread in Windows forum. Thank you for acknowledging and reaching out for Windows dev.

Having the same problem. Whether it's streaming from use of an add-on or local file on the PC where Kodi is installed. Be it .avi, mp4, mkv, .ISO or VOB @480p, 720p or 1080p. Kodi 14.2 never had this problem. 15.0-15.2 plus all the RC in between, has had this stutter and catchup problem. When it does it is kinda random, at least me. It will do it anywhere from 2min's to 60min's into playing a video file. If I pause for about 5-10sec's, it will start and play fine again. It's happened as many as 2 time during a 22-24min TV episode.

I too, will be happy to try any test builds.

@napgiver that sounds a bit different than what I am seeing. Could you post a log? That will help the developers and others in the forum a bit more to get to the root cause. You may have to turn the log level up a bit to get the debug prints.

brazen1 and I are seeing a skip issue specific to bluray ISOs. Not sure if the others are seeing the same issue. What you describe sounds different that what brazen1 and I see. I have a possible fix for the bluray issue. I however, suspect it may make things worse for other cases. If you look at my thread I describe the issue. But it sounds like yours is something else. I saw some of what you are describing with 15.0 but it seems to have been fixed for me in 15.1/15.2. With the bluray I think it is getting confused where it is at in the stream and things a gap has occurred (when it hasnt).

Is there a workaround for this video playback bug?
I am constantly seeing these on recorded videos.
Is there an external player that is recommended, and configuration guide to make it work? (I am using AEON Nox Silvo skin with 15.2 on Windows 7
Thanks

For some of the stutter it is almost acting like the file cache is not working for movies on local shares. I tested this out a few different ways in 16.x. I added in a BR iso and a dvd iso both smb and drive letter shared. I then dropped a breakpoint on CFileCache::Read the code never broke out suggesting file cache works differently for these filetypes? I suspect that because of the get errors being seen in the logs above. On a network that is sorta marginal or someone doing a few things on it could cause a stutter? I sorta got this error earlier this evening while doing a backup on one of my other computers.

Same problem here, however... my Kodi install is on an Intel NUC running OpenELEC. So, this is NOT just a Windows problem. I am VERY disappointed, because I upgraded from Frodo, and Frodi never had this problem. But... I need Kodi 15.2 so all my add-ons will work. I really don't want to go back.

Has anyone found a workaround for this issue yet?
