Would love to see a built in MadVR fork... Even if it's just for windows. But as you said, splitting this out will allow us to make the video much more platform specific.

This is easily the most important feature we'll see since high def audio.
Frodo Win 8 Pro x64
Fractal Design Node 605 (looks amazing)
i5 3570K, Asus P8Z77V LK

It already exists. It is called DSPlayer, which has already evolved for current and future technology. Although, it is only a Windows player due to its use of DirectShow software.

madVR integration is excellent - a significant upgrade over DVDPlayer. But, again, Windows-only.

The feature-set is as follows:

Rendering Features – DSPlayer with madVR:
  • High-quality chroma upscaling and image scaling (Jinc, super-xbr, NNEDI3, etc.);
  • Full 16-bit processing queue;
  • 16-bit processing result dithered down to RGB bit depth (10-bits or less);
  • Post-process image sharpening;
  • Gamut & gamma correction for display calibration;
  • Bypasses graphics card's video (damage) algorithms;
  • All work is done via GPU shaders;
  • No shortcuts - highest quality has priority over anything else.
