And download and install Kodi from kodi.tv as "community" builds are not supported here.

Escape does work but I had to re-install Kodi. I don't think it is very stable in El Capitan as it sometimes needs a restart of my Mac. Thanks for the help though.

If you are having to reboot your Mac then there is some problem with your installation. This should not be necessary. These sorts of problems are often the result of installing 3rd party addons that are not well designed or supported. You should try running Kodi with only supported addons and see if your problems disappear.
