Linux Can you release a official Kodi for Actions S500?
#1
Hello, Kodi developers. Is Actions S500 officialy supported by Kodi? Lemaker Guita and RoseapplePi both runs ported Debian Jessie and Ubuntu. It would be great if you can support these boards. The Lemaker company and the RoseapplePi company will send free samples for developing Kodi on the Actions S500 boards. You can visit their websites and forums for the free sample and resources like Linux SDK.

What VPU is the Actions S500 based on - and what Open Source driver support for it is there? They key to getting Kodi support for a platform is open and clear driver support for video hardware acceleration and a decent Open Source driver framework.

That is why AMLogic based devices and the Raspberry Pis have such good Kodi support.

It is PowerVR SGX544.

Is the PowerVR both the GPU and VPU?

Unlike PCs where the GPU also does hardware video decoding, on most ARM SoCs the GPU just does 2D and 3D rendering (so in Kodi terms handles the UI), and the video acceleration (i.e. video playback in Kodi) is handled by a separate VPU (or MFC) system that is specifically there for video decoding. (The Pi uses both VPU and GPU in some cases, say decoding in the VPU and deinterlacing in the GPU)

For decent Kodi support you really need good Open Source driver support for both sub-systems. As wsnipex has said PowerVR have a poor record with OpenSource drivers.

This is one reason we're so pleased that Intel moved away from PowerVR for their low-power Atoms and Celerons (which now have Intel GPUs instead)
