Hello, I am new to the forum and also new to Kodi, My question is, if you can use Kodi on a laptop and just use a hdmi cable to connect to your tv for a bigger screen, why would you need an android set box such as MXQ box connected to your tv?

You an leave the android box permanently connected to TV. Laptops are more expensive than the Android box.
You can get an android boxes with traditional remote controls for dirt cheap now a days.
