Moving from Windows Media Center to Kodi - Basic Questions on Limitations
#1
I've been a long time windows media center user. I've been happy with it, but it's sad to see it die.

I've been debating a switch to something like Kodi since I recently found that there are many more Live TV and PVR options these days. But I had one question, a long time ago there were alternative recording options but there were limitations to what channels you could get. Essentially it seemed like you could only get OTA channels.

My current setup is WMC + HD Home Run with Cable Card in the US.

Could anyone answer whether there would be any limitations switching from WMC to Kodi? For instance would there be any types of channels (HBO) that I can't record using NextPVR but I could using WMC?

I tried to search around for a clear answer but I couldn't find anything. Thanks!

Why not just keep WMC as your PVR backend by using ServerWMC http://kodi.wiki/view/ServerWMC

Just use Kodi as your media player and PVR frontend with the ServerWMC client.

That only works for OTA or copy freely channels.

The bottom line is that any channel your provider DRM flags as anything other than copy freely will not playback in Kodi. Kodi does not support any DRM.

Unfortunately ATM there is not much else that does - yet. SiliconDust is working on a solution as well as the folks over at JRiver - but nothing usable exists yet for copy protected content.

Stick with WMC for now......it is not completely dead yet.

go to http://IP.OF.HD.HR/lineup.html and take a look.

anything marked [DRM] in the channel list will not play in kodi.

Thanks this is exactly the info I needed to know. Sounds like it's not an easy transition if I want to record/watch the DRM marked channels. I'll keep an eye on development.
