Why can VLC play 4k Content on my Sony Android TV, but Kodi Cannot?

I would love to be able to use the Kodi interface and play the few 4k clips and movies I have on my server. At the moment I have to browse using ES File Explorer, then play through VLC which isn't a very elegant solution.

Are there any builds of Kodi I can try to make it work?

I have a Sony 65X8509C which runs Android 5.0.1.
