I use an addon called the best of youtube, when I enter a list the first couple videos are hidden as the list is scrolled down. I cannot see focus on item one but if I hit ok it plays. I work around this issue but hitting right and up, then left and I am now able to see item one and I am selecting it.

Try updating to recent Kodi version. I believe you're on Kodi Jarvis, right ?

Yes I was on Jarvis, but had installed the 15.2 directx for testing. Back on Jarvis now and it's working great.
