OpenELEC + Kodi + HEVC
#1
I've recently purchased a new HTPC with a Braswell chip and I was looking forward to installing OpenELEC and Kodi (and the Emby addon). I wanted to take advantage of hardware decoding of hevc but I'm not really sure which version of Kodi I am supposed to install. From what I've gathered in the first few posts of this thread (http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=231955) is that Kodi 15.2 does not support hardware hevc. That support will be built into Kodi 16. However, the developer that posts on that thread has a link to a version of OpenELEC with EGL (http://fritsch.fruehberger.net/openelec/v15_2_EGL//). Which version do I install?

1. Kodi 15.2 ("Isengard")
2. Kodi 15.2 ("Isengard") modified with EGL for support for hardware hevc decoding
3. Kodi 16.X beta ("Jarvis")

Once I figure out the build I'm guessing it's just a matter of changing some settings and away I go:

Video – Playback – Adjust display refresh rate: On start/stop
Video – Playback – Sync playback to display: Enabled
Video – Acceleration – Render method: Auto detect
Video – Acceleration – Enable HQ scalers for scalings above: 20%
Video – Acceleration – Allow hardware acceleration – VDPAU: Disabled
Video – Acceleration – Allow hardware acceleration – VAAPI: Enabled
Video – Acceleration – Use Mpeg-2 VAAPI: Enabled
Video – Acceleration – Use Mpeg-4 VAAPI: Enabled
Video – Acceleration – Use VC-1 VAAPI: Enabled
Video – Acceleration – Prefer VAAPI render method: Enabled

My ultimate goal is to play all my content (mixed of regular h264 and hevc) and passthrough Dolby DTS-MA and TrueHD. Any suggestions as to my plan of attack? If it helps, I'm not the most comfortable making all those console settings changes that are in the first post here (http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=231955).

Thank you!

Intel can only do HEVC 8 bit decoding keep that in mind. 10 bit HEVC won't work nicely ... hw limitation.

15.2 EGL backport (not developed anymore, basically no time, provide as is): http://fritsch.fruehberger.net/openelec/v15_2_EGL/
17.x EGL active development builds: http://fritsch.fruehberger.net/openelec/...r_testing/ (sort by date and choose latest)

Basically you cannot use any mainline / master builds - as all of those don't have that EGL work (needed for perfect colors and high throughput).
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

Thank you for your response, fritsch. It sounds like my best option is going to v15_2_EGL so I'll install that. Thank you for your response and for all the hard work done by you and your team.
