There is a wealth of information here so I'm hoping for some pointers to cut down the amount of time needed to narrow my choices down. My situation is that I already have a NAS on my network and in the past had just run the Windows version of Kodi on my kids TV in the play room via an HDMI out on the video card. Well the windows 10 upgrade has introduced some problems with how that works and after a few weeks of fighting with it and the fact that if I'm not around and something isn't working quite right on the video output they're unable to use it I've decided to look for a small, energy efficient player that can hopefully be powered by the TV's USB port (not a deal killer) and have an interface that a 6 year old can handle. Ideally it will also have a working Netflix option as we are down to antenna at the house now with a modest net connection and a Netflix subscription.

A couple of years ago (before I setup a computer with HDMI out) I bought a Minix Neo G4 with the intention of using it but have never got it to quite work with XBMC/Kodi and it's support has gone to practically nil in their community. There used to be a build of XBMC for it and I sort of had it working but after a hiatus from that project have been unable to find the resources that used to be out there. Lately I've been thinking about the Rasberry Pi options but am unsure if the Netflix will be an issue as well as the ease of use for the kids.

I'm hoping that this can be accomplished at under $100.

So here are some other bits of info if it helps:

- I am pretty familiar with futzing around in most OS's including Windows, Android, and linux
- Our video archive is nothing special as far as tech goes, mainly a mix of SD/HD in M4V, MKV, and AVI formats
- I have a Rosewill HTPC remote (w/ USB dongle) that I'd like to utilize if possible - otherwise a wireless controller of some type

Thanks to any who take the time to make suggestions.

Amazon FireTV has Netflix as native app and it's under $100.

Is that the box? Does is have Kodi as an App?

Also, I thought the Fire's aren't working as "native" types.

I always recommend the Wetek, simply because of their community. their forum is great in solving problems, and the proximity between customer and devs is amazing...
although for the under 100 dollar price..., i read they were launching a new product tomorrow (lacking confirmation) but you can read all about it here:

specs: http://www.seeandsound.com/index.php...d_attachment=2

dunno if this is true, i just read it online, and can't seam to find information anywhere.
but if its true, they are advertising it for 90 Dollars

cheers

Thanks shabuboy, that's where I started. As stated there's a lot to researching so I thought I'd ask for help from those who've come before me.

I'm now looking at the FireTV stick as a possibility. So long as it doesn't have to be logged into my Amazon account or has some way to ensure my kids can't "accidentally" buy things on my credit card this might be the winner. As stated, my needs aren't great... basically a remote, Netflix, maybe Hulu, and the ability to play videos that I already have on my NAS.

In case anyone with a similar question as me comes upon this I will quickly say that the Amazon Fire TV stick seem to fit the bill. Got it and within 30 minutes of opening it had Kodi and Netflix running on the kids TV. Only issue so far is getting it to read from the filestore on my NAS but I'll start searching for that solution now.

Yeah... I'm actually very familiar with Kodi/XBMC as I've been using it since hacking my old original XBOX a long time ago, in a basement far far away... I think this problem is either something specific to my synology based NAS or that the latest update to the Fire Stick is goofing with IPs or something.

I can attach to another source on my network without a problem and other clients on my network can attach to the NAS, but Kodi specifically is failing at the NAS via SMB. It sees the server in the browse list but at the point you would normally get a credential request it's just saying that it failed. I tried to do the manual \\server\share thing and even IP but no dice.

I'm patient... and subscribing to a few other threads here so I'm sure the solution will pop up.
